The area of Eixample can be devided into two parts. The right sight is called Eixample Derecha. This is one of the most upright parts of Barcelona. The area is very recognizable on grounplans, due to its quadratic blocks (called manzana´s) and the straight roads with lots of traffic. Eixmple Derecha is a very lively part of the city, where you can find lots of shops, restaurants, museums and several parks. In the area near the Arc de Triomf you will find many Chinese clothing shops. The most famous construction of Barcelona, the Sagrada Familia, can be found in Eixample Derecha. This impressive cathedral has been designed by Antoni Gaudí and is overloaded with symbols that cite to nature. They started building the cathedral at 1882. Until his death lived on-site for 16 years. He is now buried in a crypt below the cathedral. This master work of Gaudi is not expected to be completed until 2026. The Passeig de Gracia is the most important shopping street in Eixample, where most of the designer shops can be found. This street actually lies between the two parts of Eixample. On either side of these streets several Modernistic buildings are located. On the side of Eixample Dereche there is Casa Mila which is also called ´La Pedrera´. |
